Being a catalyst for joy.
I was invited to a business dinner about a month in advance. A former colleague was coming to town to introduce his team to my former parent company and explore opportunities to work together. From a business perspective, my presence at the dinner wasn’t necessary, and as the evening approached, I debated whether I should go. Every time I thought about canceling, I got a strong nudge to go, so I decided to listen to my instinct.
On my drive home afterwards, I realized that while I wasn’t meant to be there to accomplish something for myself or my company, I was meant to serve as a social catalyst for the evening. Recalling memories with my former colleague and sharing stories brought warmth, laughter and joy. Positive feelings flowed through us to the others, and I played an active role in engaging everyone at the table. The dinner ended up being a good time for all and the highlight of my week.
I share this story because in business, or in life for that matter, it’s not always about us, or accomplishing, achieving or executing. Sometimes it’s about others, and just showing up and sharing our positive energy and goodwill.
When we humble ourselves in this way, we greatly enrich our lives, nurture our souls and strengthen our connections with others. When we selflessly share our time and energy, we not only are a catalyst for joy…we experience joy ourselves.
